Exploring Inequality in Schools – St John’s Central College, Cork

Video casestudy:

Students have produced a short animated sequence involving the global inequalities that have become evident as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This was a cross-curricular project, between the animation, illustration and communications modules that students have been undertaking.

The group had an introduction into the Oxfam Inequality Kills report, leading to group discussion and division of areas of interest. Individual exploration of specific themes within the report then took place. Individual research into wider elements of the theme was carried out, where students began to get a better understanding of the issues and their root causes. Students carried out analysis of key points. The students research was translated into animation storyboard format. This led to the production of animated sequences exploring the issue of inequality. As a result of the students engagement in this project, it has led to heightened awareness and critical understanding of how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted on global communities in ways the students had not been aware of.

The completed film was included on the college facebook page and shown at the end of year exhibition.

Key learning: A deeper understanding of the nature of global economic inequality and a greater and more engaged impassioned sense regarding global injustices.
