3. GCE Themed Events

Globally themed events are a great way of engaging students and the wider community in GCE issues that have momentum around the world. Students from as many year groups as possible would lead or be involved in events such as Fairtrade Fortnight, World Food Day or World Water Day. Teachers are encouraged to explore the relevance of the GCE topic within their curriculum subject during this time.

UN International Days

A list of internationally celebrated days to assist schools in identifying opportunities for students to run awareness raising days on various issues. The expansive list offers teachers the opportunity to identify a range of global days that are related directly to their curriculum and which can be explored in class.

Extra Curricular opportunities – DevelopmentEducation.ie

DevelopmentEducation.ie provide a number of links to extra-curricular opportunities that will facilitate you undertake global development themed events. This includes concern debates competition, Fairtrade fortnight, and other post-primary initiatives that provide a framework for undertaking Global themed events.

Fashion Revolution Week

fashionrevolution.org — Fashion Revolution Week is our #whomademyclothes campaign in April, which was established at the time of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, where 1,138 people were killed and many more injured on 24th April 2013. ‘Fashion Revolution’ use this week to encourage millions of people to ask brands “Who made my clothes?” and demand greater transparency in the fashion supply chain. It can be a wonderful whole-school event which thoroughly explores themes such as responsible consumption and production, interdependence, human rights, etc.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade fortnight is an opportunity to get the whole school community thinking about global justice issues around food and poverty. It explores the local to global issues and how Fairtrade can support farming communities to get fair and equal wages, conditions and supports. IILT – Creating an Intercultural Environment

While slightly dated this guide provides a range of tips for how to create an intercultural environment within schools. This includes the physical environment, activities to encourage interaction with all pupils, occasions to bring parents together and activities to support communication among whole school communities.

Davis College, Cork

“All of our students can participate in Davis College Model United Nations (DCMUN)… with a great focus on Development education issues (if not only). DCMUN is, in fact, open to all students from all year groups not only in Davis College but also from other schools in Ireland and abroad. Loreto College, St. Stephens Green, Dublin

“Student Council and The Amnesty International Group organise a Human Rights Day on the 10th December. This year it involved the students making a video of the all the Rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was then viewed in every classroom in the school.” Diplomatic Global Passport Award Winner 2016

Beaufort College, Co. Meath  

Beaufort College ran a “Sustaining our World” Festival in the week of 19^th October 2015. They ran a range of workshops and activities with students throughout the week with various NGO’s brought in to provide different workshops on DE themes. They also ran a number of DE additional activities in tandem. All students, teachers, school management are involved in this annual DE project. It is linked in with annual Sports Day, One World Week, Seachtain na Gaeilge, Intercultural projects, Fair trade Fortnight and Mental Health Week. Diplomatic Global Passport Award Winner 2015

Holy Family Community School, Rathcool

“This Year one group of third years arranged a fair-trade awareness day as part of their CSPE project. During this day they spoke to all first and second year groups about the importance of fair-trade and they ran a tasting day. Another third year group arranged an Intercultural day promoting various types of food and clothes and this was open to all junior students. Our TY students focused on fair-trade with the senior students arranging an ice-cream day where students were encouraged to buy Ben and Jerry’s as it is fair-trade. They also presented on the little difference between prices of normal and fair-trade items and where the products are available.” Diplomatic Global Passport Award Winner 2015
